NZ cost of living falls as housing steadies and shipping sinks
THIS week's update to the FW cost of living index sees a 2p fall in the price of a flat white bought from Cuba Street Wellington. I'm thankful to say that it's getting marginally cheaper to live and work in the city.
In other economic news, The Herald reports that house prices are stabilising:
The national average house sale price has increased to $378,535 in June from $371,555 in May.
QV Valuations manager Glenda Whitehead said the sales volume was approaching more normal levels and the market was more stable.
And the Otago Daily Times carries a story of the recession on the high seas.
About 9% of the global fleet of container ships, bulk carriers, tankers, refrigerated cargo ships and car carriers, are inactive in locations throughout the world.>
Since New Zealand relies heavily on exports of agricultural goods and the import of fancy items and tourists, this signals a strong downturn for the Kiwi economy.
But it might be exactly the right time to ship your goods over from the UK!

Just out of sheer curiosity, what is the price of a flat white in London?
Assuming of course such a thing is available, we won't talk about quality ;-)

It's a good question, Is.
My experience of trying to get flat white in the UK is to ask for a double shot espresso with hot steamed milk on the side.
Then you have to add the milk to your preferred strength.
most of the chains do only the insipid, weak Latte, which is certainly not worth keeping a cost of living index for.
As for price... er.. dunno... anyone?

I shall make it my special business to research coffee prices for you on my trip back home.
