New Zealand wine bargains

Study shows supermarket New World wine prices are worth emigrating for.

THIS New Zealand Life was stunned to discover that budget Australian wine sold at New World online was far cheaper than the same wine sold in UK flagship supermarket Tesco.

This is despite the recent increase in duty on NZ wines, spirits and beer.

A new study by TNZL showed that wine purchased from supermarket chain New World, in their online shop, was an average of £2.69 cheaper per bottle for the four wines compared.

If you were to drink just 400 bottles while in New Zealand, your trip would be paid for out of the savings, though for short stayers and holiday makers this is obviously not recommended.

Label Tesco Price New World Price
Jacobs Creek Chardonnay 75cl £6.78 ($17.48) £3.87 ($9.99)
Jacobs Creek Riesling 750ml £6.79 ($17.51) £3.87 (($9.99)
Jacobs Creek Shiraz Cabernet 75cl £5.87 ($15.13) £3.87 ($9.99)
Jacobs Creek Shiraz 75cl £6.78 ($17.48) £3.87 ($9.99)

All comparisons are done using today's exchange rate of 0.39 pounds sterling to the NZ dollar, as supplied by XE Currency Update.

The price of New Zealand wine is a source of great frustration to my father who loves to drink it but refuses to pay the high prices in the UK. I always buy when the bargains are on and for everyday drinking wine paying $10-12 a bottle seems about right. My husband hides the good stuff away which I think is rather selfish but probably very wise!

We find that the wine we'd pay five or six pounds for in the UK is the bargain bucket wine here. i.e. Jacob's creek.

But it's a source of many great pleasures to be able to pay $10 for a bottle that is perfectly drinkable.

For plonk I go for Queen Adelaide Shiraz when its on special at $7.99 (ususal price is 11.99.) Both New World and Woolworths discount it - often at different times.

Unfortunatly - the wine I really like is our "local" from Gladstone Winery (though just about all the Wairarapa winerys are rather scrummy). Its about $30 a bottle - and isnt often on special anywhere :(

I just love New Zealand wine :)One of the real pleasures of living here :)

I love Martinborough Pinot Noir, but I'm biased because I can walk down the road to the vineyards!

I am a fan of Queen Adelaide sparkling. I note that it contains traces of egg milk or fish. Does thia reflect in the taste?

Never had Queen Adelaide myself. Ill have to give it a try.
