Blog roundup: Midwinter food fest, and some stunning images

A PICK of the New Zealand themed blogs this week includes Slightly Intrepid's insights into Kiwi personality traits.

Perhaps unkindly he likens Auckland's yearly free rubbish collection to feeding time at the shark pen.

I’m not saying that at this time of year Auckland is akin to the slums of Mumbai, with urchins picking a living from the carcases of a consumer society. But the collection does bring out that great character trait of New Zealanders: their unerring love of free stuff.

Meanwhile the shortest day of the year brings out the eccentrics on this side of the globe too. In New Zealand this has been expressed in a plaster of paris replica of stonehenge and a winter solstice celbration as documented by Avalon.

It was built by members of the Phoenix Astronomical Society, and it is designed to mark the movement of the stars, and to act as an educational centre teaching people about New Zealand's ancestors.

Chez Lee offers some stunning photos of the distant South Island this week as an antidote to the cold weather.

Blue sky, wild seas and a crystal clear view, over the Cook Strait, to the Kaikoura Ranges laden with snow.

And Domestic Executive proves that very great things can come in small packages when a Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall inspired recipe comes in handy for midwinter brunch.

Who would of thought you could fit a full English Breakfast in a small ramekin and it taste as good and be as filling.

The foodfest continues as Kiwi Fruit shows a mouthwatering picture of rhubarb and apples as part of a delicious study of that ancient mid-winter tradition: the crumble.

There is nothing odd about the flavour of Apple and Rhubarb Crumble, people. It is divine!
