Tiddly Poms

Wine_bottle_webI just loved the headline in yesterday's Dominion post: "Tiddly poms lap up our Sav", but did the article make any sense apart from the great intro?

According to the report, NZ Sauvignon blanc has grown by "370 per cent in the past fortnight at supermarket giant Tesco."

Now I can believe that when Tescos puts a wine on offer its sales will rocket, but that's hardly a growth rate. It can't be sustained, Tesco will move onto an Aussie wine next or a German Riesling.

"The success, experts say, is down to a bumper harvest and the vagaries of the financial markets," says the Dom.

But I can't agree with this either. The success is down to Tesco business practices buying up cheap wine in a harvest glut and discounting it so spectacularly that only a fool would buy anything else.

Looking at Tesco online prices, you can see Fern Bay sav at £4.99 and Nobilo sav at £4.99 These are great prices for NZ wine, it's not surprising sales have been so high.

And I'd be willing to bet there are even better offers available in store. Leave a comment if you know better!
