Blog Roundup: Driving, food and Anzac day

FOR photographs this week, it's always worth a look on the Hamilton Daily Photo as the South African Kiwi records his life in the Waikato district, and TrekNature reminds us that New Zealand is not only incubating swine flu at the moment but is also home to microbial life of many other sorts. Many of it unique.

Bing's NZ photo blog has a few great shots commemorating ANZAC day. A day when shops close, marches start at 6 am, the cafes serve remembrance breakfast, and special events are staged across the country.

Dave Moore at Drive Talk thinks it's no surprise the NZ road toll is twice that of the UK; Kiwis are terrible, impatient drivers and the government shows no interest in re-education.

Meanwhile Kiwibloke has elicited a fascinating discussion about self defence during a robbery. Should victims be able to use brutal force to defend themselves? And in what circumstances? You do not get the impression violent crime is a huge issue in NZ, but Kiwis do seem to be less frightened of making a stand.

For a light bite of the blogs, take a look at the Inquiring Mind and the list of 10 quintessential Kiwi delicacies. I made the point that beetroot had been left from the list. If you are a beetroot hater, like myself, you will find the surprise inclusion of this horror particularly distasteful whenever you simply want a sandwich from the corner shop (known here as the Dairy).
